Cyprus: due to lack of tourists the hotels will start to close massively in mid-September
Reducing the list of safe countries in Cyprus will prove to be an additional serious blow for hotels: hoteliers in Ayia Napa and Protaras expect "even harder days". In particular, due to the fact that in group B, tourists from which can get to Cyprus only after a negative test for coronavirus, the other day again got Austria and Switzerland.
September and October were usually important months for the tourist sector of Cyprus, with tourists with a higher income than in summer arriving at this time. But the coronavirus pandemic has pushed tourism into a spin, and due to the new closure of borders by European countries in September, no improvement is expected.
As explained in the Cyprus Hotels Association, in recent months the island has managed to attract some arrivals from Austria and Switzerland, but both countries have recently been transferred to Group B. And those transferred to group A New Zealand and South Korea, to put it mildly, are not significant suppliers of tourists for Cyprus and will not replace tourists from Austria and Switzerland.
As a result, the Association expects the hotels, which opened in mid-summer, to close by mid-September, as local tourists will return home after their August vacations.
At the same time, forecasts for next year are "tied" to the availability of vaccines. What will happen if the vaccine will not be until the next tourist season - hoteliers and "do not want to think.
Earlier Cypriots calculated their income from tourism, recognizing their decline catastrophic - they collapsed this year almost to zero in annual terms. According to this data, tourism revenues reached 6.7 million euros in June 2020, compared to 350.4 million euros in the same month last year, recording a drop of 98.1 percent.
